Kisoro Timber Dealers & Carpentry Co-operative Society

about us

Kisoro Timber Dealers and Carpentry Co-operative Society Limited is a community-driven organization committed to promoting sustainable timber trade, environmental conservation, and the empowerment of local communities. Established in December 2016 as Kisoro Timber Dealers Association, the co-operative began with just 28 members (5 females, 3 youth, and 20 males). Over the years, the society has grown to 209 members, including marginalized groups like the Batwa and rural women.

Our primary mission is to address the challenges of illegal timber trade, ensure responsible timber harvesting, and support the completion of the timber value chain. By providing training in carpentry and furniture making, fostering savings and credit programs, and planting trees for future harvests, we are not only working toward environmental conservation but also enhancing the livelihoods of our members.

Since its inception, the co-operative has successfully planted over 493,000 trees, with strong partnerships supporting tree planting initiatives, including WWF, UNHCR, and Uplifting Rural Poor. Our members are also involved in a thriving apiary project, with 180 bee hives, and macadamia tree cultivation, which has become a valuable source of income.

In addition to tree planting, the co-operative has established key projects like the Woodmizer Band Saw Mill, which offers high-quality timber production and generates income for the co-operative. Furthermore, we are in the process of constructing a Timber Stores and Workshops Business Centre to resolve issues like congestion and timber waste disposal along Chuho Road and provide additional rental income.

Looking toward the future, our vision is to build a sustainable, nature-based community that thrives on innovation, financial independence, and environmental stewardship. We aim to open a Skilling and Business Centre in 2025 to provide vocational training to youth and carpenters across Kisoro District, ensuring that our members are equipped with the skills needed for a prosperous future.

Vision

To create a sustainable, nature-based community where innovation, financial independence, and environmental stewardship thrive among our members.
