OUR SERVICES

At Kisoro Timber Dealers and Carpentry Co-operative Society Limited, we are committed to providing a range of services designed to benefit not only our members but also the broader community in Kisoro District and Uganda as a whole. Our services are focused on sustainable environmental practices, economic empowerment, skill development, and the creation of long-term solutions that promote social and economic well-being.

Tree Planting

One of our core services is tree planting and environmental conservation. We have planted over 493,000 trees across Kisoro District, including both indigenous and exotic species. These efforts, supported by partners like WWF and UNHCR, not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also provide economic benefits for local farmers who can sell timber and other tree products. Additionally, these tree planting initiatives help combat soil erosion, improve water retention, and create a more resilient environment for local communities, with the added benefit of supporting Uganda's national environmental goals.

apiary (beekeeping) project

Our apiary (beekeeping) project is another key service that has proven to be a valuable source of income for our members. We have provided over 180 beehives and other necessary equipment to members, along with macadamia trees to enhance the local environment for beekeeping. As a result, members are able to harvest and sell honey, which generates steady income. Beekeeping also supports environmental sustainability by promoting pollination, which benefits local crops and ecosystems. This project is not only beneficial for the individuals involved but also contributes to Uganda’s agricultural sector by promoting organic, locally produced honey.

Financial Empowerment

We run a revolving fund or SACCO project that provides financial resources to our members through low-interest loans. This service allows members to access capital for business ventures, personal needs, or agricultural improvements. The revolving fund, supported by WWF's Uplifting Rural Poor program, has grown to 45,000,000 UGX and plays a vital role in promoting financial independence, improving livelihoods, and supporting daily operations for the co-operative. It helps to foster a culture of savings and financial responsibility while providing economic opportunities that are otherwise difficult to access in rural areas.

timber production and Value addition

Another significant service is our timber production and value-added wood products project, which involves the operation of a Woodmizer sawmill. This sawmill, donated by WWF, allows us to produce high-quality timber and provides an alternative source of income for members by offering timber cutting services. The sawmill has helped combat the poor-quality timber supply in the market and offers sustainable timber production practices, promoting responsible forest management. The income generated from this project not only benefits the co-operative but also supports local businesses, contributing to the economic development of Kisoro District.

SKILLING AND BUSINESS CENTRE

In line with our mission to empower youth and promote skill development, we are establishing a Skilling and Business Centre. This centre will provide training in carpentry and related trades, equipping young people and community members with valuable skills that can lead to employment or entrepreneurship. This initiative will create long-term opportunities for youth in Kisoro District and contribute to the growth of the local carpentry sector. By offering business skills training, we aim to foster entrepreneurship and provide resources for individuals to establish their own businesses, creating jobs and contributing to the local economy.

Additionally, we are developing a Timber Stores and Workshops Business Centre, which aims to address issues such as congestion and health hazards due to improper timber handling along Chuho Road. This project will provide organized spaces for timber dealers and carpenters, improving working conditions and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. The rental income generated will provide financial support for the co-operative, ensuring its continued operation and growth. This initiative will improve the local business environment while contributing to Kisoro Municipality's development.

Together, these services form a comprehensive approach to community and economic development in Kisoro District. By promoting environmental sustainability, financial empowerment, skill development, and entrepreneurship, we are working to improve livelihoods while contributing to Uganda's national development goals. Our efforts have the potential to create lasting change across Kisoro District and beyond, building a sustainable future where communities thrive economically and socially while preserving the environment for future generations.
